E-car MG4 Electric: Chinese attack VW and Co. with price-performance crackers

The MG4 Electric is here. Customers can now configure the electric car online. The price for which the new competitor for VW, Peugeot and Co. can be had is also known. MG’s price tag is a challenge to the established manufacturers, but German customers have to dig deeper into their pockets.

MG4 Electric: If you want to keep up, you have to push your limits

The former British brand MG Motors has officially presented its latest electric car for the European market: The MG4 Electric convinces as a real price-performance hit. The MG4, already available in China under the name Mulan, can significantly undercut competitors such as VW in terms of purchase price, but without being worse equipped.

The MG4 Electric comes in three trim levels: Standard, Comfort and Luxury. The former achieves a range of 350 km with its 51 kWh battery. The two more expensive versions bring it with 64 kWh battery to 450 km. According to MG, the battery modules are particularly flat with a height of only 11 cm. This ensures more space inside with a low structure and a particularly low center of gravity.

The maximum system output of 150 kW can be brought onto the road in four preset driving modes. Basic driving assistants are already included with MG from the standard version, such as parking assistance. who 360 degree all-round view via cameras, however, must choose the luxury equipment, which is also equipped with a heat pump. This enables up to 10 percent more range, according to MG during the virtual presentation (view on YouTube).

The MG4 Electric is loaded with up to 135 kW at the DC fast charging station. At least up to 11 kW should be possible at home. Under ideal conditions, the MG4 charges 80 percent of the battery capacity in 35 minutes. The three configurations are offered in seven colors.

Electric cars from China start in Germany from 31,990 euros

When it came to the price, MG didn’t let anyone look at their cards until the very end – and even now there is still a dampener for German customers. Online in the MG configurator, the starting price for the standard edition is given as 28,420 euros. But according to the presentation by MG, this price does not apply to Germany. A surcharge applies here the MG4 starts at 31,990 euros.

The difference can be explained by the manufacturer’s share of the environmental bonus and an inflation buffer, which should have already been priced in. Other manufacturers or other industries are also familiar with the problem that German prices are often higher than in the rest of Europe. The Comfort Edition comes online at 32,420 euros (probably 35,990 euros for Germany), the Luxury version should come to 37,990 euros in Germany (currently listed online for 34,420 euros).

Here’s a first look at the MG4 Electric:

Anyone who deducts the environmental bonus, at the current level or reduced from 2023, will receive an attractive electric car that VW and Co. have to be able to keep up with. Especially since MG says so has no problems delivering the Stromer quickly – currently a decisive competitive advantage.

MG has two more versions up its sleeve

But the wait could also be worth it: the manufacturer has two other variants of the MG4 Electric have already been announced. A sports version should be equipped with extra power and almost halve the time from 0 to 100 km/h. A version with a 77 kWh battery is also planned, which should achieve a range of over 500 km. There is no date yet.
