We never repeat it enough but everything is political, or almost. And EA Sports seems to fully assume its new decision. Here’s what we know about FIFA 23 and one of its teams.
With the War in Ukraine currently raging, some companies want to take symbolic action. And if it is clearly not the first to do so, EA wants to mark the occasion with FIFA 23 by showing solidarity with the Ukrainian people.
Russia, big absent from FIFA 23
No need to beat around the bush any longer, you guessed it already: The Russian team will be absent of the famous football game. Here is an official statement about it with some explanation:
EA Sports stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and, like so many voices across the footballing world, calls for peace and an end to the invasion of Ukraine.
In line with our partners at FIFA and UEFA, EA Sports will not include the Russian national team or Russian clubs in FIFA 23.
The logical continuation after EA’s liabilities on this subject
This decision is in fact nothing very surprising. Already last March, EA announced that it wanted to stop all sales of games and content, including virtual currency packs, in Russia and its ally Belarus as long as the invasion continued. Moreover, the Russian team was already removed from FIFA 22 earlier this year as you can see in this tweet from March:
