According to a new rumor, the launch of BF 2042 would not have lived up to the ambitions of EA, which would seek another way to continue the franchise… Perhaps in free-to-play.
Will we see two significant changes in the coming years on the side of the battle between Call of Duty and Battlefield? While the Activision license could abandon its annual episode to let players and creators breathe a little, EA’s title would be thinking about a new business model. Indeed, according to the insider specializing in licensing, Tom Henderson, the company would have badly digested the launch of Battlefield 2042, below expectations. On PC, the game has even been abandoned in favor of BF5 by players.
EA is reportedly very disappointed with how Battlefield 2042 has performed and is “looking at all the options” when it comes to the title, this is including looking at Free to Play in some capacity.

If the title is not bad, it struggled because of server problems, balancing, several bugs at launch and even missing features. A new big update will also arrive in mid-February. According to Henderson, “all options” are being considered on Electronic Arts’ side, including moving to a free model.
This rumor is not implausible. Not only the sector is very lucrative, with the obvious examples like Fortnite or Warzone, but in addition the DICE studio had declared last December his interest in making a Battlefield Universe, a connected universe of games in the franchise, by relying on BF Mobile and the Portals mode of BF 2042. At the time, it seemed to already see a kind of “Warzone for Battlefield”, which will probably go through the free-to-play box in this case…
