Relive Emmanuel Macron’s inauguration ceremony at the Elysée.
The guests leave the Elysée
The carriage ball has resumed and of course everyone is watching who is speaking with whom, while the Prime Minister who will succeed Jean Castex is still not known.

The 21 cannon shots and the Marseillaise
At the end of the ceremony, Emmanuel Macron went out in the park to review the troops to the sound of the Marseillaise but also of the piece “Terre et mer” from Bagad de Lann-Bihoué, already played during the quinquennium to pay tribute to soldiers killed in operations in the Sahel. As tradition dictates, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, 21 cannon shots will be fired from the Invalides.

Investiture of Emmanuel Macron: the hug to the parents of Samuel Paty
Emmanuel Macron’s speech
The President of the Republic Emmanuel Macron declaimed a speech in the village hall of the Elysée. “The French people have chosen a republican and European project”, he first declared, before repeating the word “act”, insisting in particular on ecology and school. He then spoke of a “new method”, by making “the government, the social partners, the associations work together”, for him “the foundation of the democratic renaissance that our country needs”. “It is in the most difficult times that France reveals itself”, he added, “we have to show a way”. “Let’s have the courage to take a better look at reality,” he said. “Let’s continue to love the Republic (…) Let’s love our country (…) which has offered the world the wildest dreams, humanism, the Enlightenment, human rights”. “Each day of the mandate which opens I will have only one compass, to serve”. “To the children, I swear to bequeath a more livable planet,” he concluded.

During a sober ceremony of an hour and a half in the Elysee Palace, Emmanuel Macron is again invested president on Saturday before starting a second five-year term which remains to be drawn. The Elysée respected the protocol followed by Presidents François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac during their re-elections, with its main stages: reception in the village hall, proclamation of the results by the President of the Constitutional Council Laurent Fabius, speech, cannonade at the Invalides , review of the troops in the garden. Without leaving either in the main courtyard, or on the Champs-Elysées, or at the Hôtel de Ville in Paris.
A televised ceremony
It is above all a televised ceremony, broadcast live on all the major channels and produced by Jérôme Revon, project manager of several major ceremonies of the quinquennium and adviser to Emmanuel Macron during his campaign. About fifteen cameras have been installed in the courtyard, the palace and the garden, “an important device, like for a big football match”, explained the director to AFP. A rehearsal on Friday evening allowed the final details to be settled.
But the event will be much less spectacular than the investiture of May 14, 2017, when hundreds of journalists and guests watched in the courtyard of honor, and even on the roofs, the arrival of the young president of 39 years on the long red carpet and the departure of his predecessor François Hollande in stride. This time, the ceremony will be sober, out of respect for the protocol but also by political will after the clear victory of Emmanuel Macron marked nevertheless by a record score of his far-right opponent Marine Le Pen.
The only personal touch of the re-elected president will relate to the choice of the 450 guests, with categories which will be honored, after the crises crossed during the first five-year term and to open on the future. We will thus see, under the golds of the palace, caregivers, local elected officials, heads of associations, athletes and young people, in order to recall the priorities displayed for the new five-year term, including a reform of the hospital, yet to be specified. .
The Head of State’s speech should also recall the main directions he intends to give in the next five years, without being a general policy speech or addressing current issues, starting with the choice of a new Prime Minister. “This ceremony aims to establish a sacredness of the Republic. It is part of a long path of political and historical traditions of which the president is the depositary”, explained the Elysée.
With Sarkozy and Holland
Before the ceremony, guests will arrive in the main courtyard on a half-length red carpet. At 11 a.m., Emmanuel Macron will enter the Salle des Fêtes, the largest and most prestigious room in the palace, to the sound of the first movement of Handel’s Oboe Concerto.
His family will be present, including his wife Brigitte, his friends, the members of the government, Jean Castex at the head, as well as the main officials of the assemblies, the constituted and intermediary bodies, the academies, the unions, the cults…
Former presidents Nicolas Sarkozy and François Hollande and ex-Prime Minister Edouard Philippe will be among them. On the other hand, the representatives of the oppositions are not invited.
At the end of the ceremony, Emmanuel Macron will go out in the park to review the troops to the sound of the Marseillaise but also of the piece “Terre et mer” from Bagad de Lann-Bihoué, already played during the quinquennium to pay tribute to soldiers killed in operation in the Sahel. As tradition dictates, whose origins date back to the Middle Ages, 21 cannon shots will be fired from the Invalides.
This investiture does not mark the start of the new five-year term: it will officially be necessary to wait for the end of the first, on the evening of Friday May 13 at midnight.
The appointment of the new Prime Minister, the subject of all speculation for several days, will only take place after this date. Until then, “the government is hard at work to act, protect the French, take all the necessary decisions, and the time for individual decisions and appointments has not come,” spokesman Gabriel Attal said on Wednesday. , reporting remarks by the Head of State.
