Earthquake in Indonesia: at least 14 dead

(dpa/Reuters) A 5.6 magnitude earthquake has killed at least 46 people on the Indonesian island of Java. This is reported by the Reuters news agency, citing the government. Videos on social media showed collapsed buildings and people crying. There was rubble everywhere on the streets. There was initially no exact number of injuries.

The earthquake happened on Monday afternoon (local time) near the capital Jakarta on the island of Java. The epicenter was a few kilometers southwest of the town of Cianjur. This is also where the greatest damage occurred.

The earthquake was also clearly felt in Jakarta itself. High-rise buildings swayed, however, no major damage was reported in the metropolis. According to the US Earthquake Monitor (USGS), the quake took place at a depth of ten kilometers. There was no tsunami warning.

The island nation of Indonesia lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, the most geologically active zone on earth. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions are common there.
