Manuel Akanji and Manchester City secure their first victory at the Club World Cup. Fluminense has no chance.

Manchester City lived up to their role as favorites at the Club World Cup in Saudi Arabia and secured the title in their first participation. In the final, the Champions League winner beat Brazilian top team Fluminense Rio de Janeiro 4-0.

The English continued their series of European victories: For the 11th time in a row, the triumph went to a team from Europe; Corinthians Sao Paulo won in 2012. Manuel Akanji, who came on as a substitute in the 74th minute, is only the second Swiss player to be crowned club world champion after Xherdan Shaqiri (2014 with Bayern and 2020 with Liverpool).

Alvarez scores early and twice

In Jeddah, Julian Alvarez (1st) ensured a perfect debut for Pep Guardiola’s team with his goal after just a few seconds. Fluminense defender Nino (27th) also scored an own goal, Phil Foden (72nd) and Alvarez again (88th) increased.

For ManCity it was the 5th major title this year after winning the Champions League, the European Super Cup, the English Championship and the FA Cup. Erling Haaland was missing: Because he was not in the squad in the semi-finals, the Norwegian was not allowed to play in the final either.

Koller takes bronze

In the game for third place, Swiss coach Marcel Koller’s team prevailed: Al Ahly from Egypt won 4-2 against the Japanese Urawa Red Diamonds. Koller’s team had temporarily given up a 2-0 lead, but in the end they were able to celebrate again with a two-goal lead.
