The lawyer succumbed to 238 days of hunger strike. She was fighting for a fair trial, in a country where justice is very permeable to power.
On Thursday August 27, Turkey lawyer Ebru Timtik died of a hunger strike.
This lawyer was convicted in 2019 by the Turkish authorities because of her “membership of a terrorist organization”.
In fact, this courageous and committed woman was part of a law firm known for its work in high-profile cases unpleasant to the government.
She notably supported Kurdish dissidents against the Turkish regime.
Their law firm, People's Law Office, had worked to shed light on the death of a 15-year-old who died following tear gas canisters by police during a protest. Lawyers for the firm were also arrested in 2017, ahead of the trial of two academics sacked after the July 2016 putsch.
Maitre Daniel Lévy, French lawyer explains: “The truth is that a lawyer should not be confused with the cause of his client, that he has the right to defend whomever he wants without being blamed. Turkey does not want to understand it ”.
On Twitter, her relatives greet a courageous woman who loves justice and is ready to fight for human rights to her death.
His colleagues have also paid him international tributes.
