Pole vault men: Alberto early in Duplantis victory

Armand Duplantis defended the European title he won four years ago in Berlin. When the German Bo Kanda Lita Baehre, cheered on by the audience, who surprisingly secured silver, jumped to 5.95 m, the Swede’s victory was certain. He then jumped the height of 6.06 meters, increasing his previous European Championship record by one centimeter. In view of the cool conditions, he decided not to attempt a world record.

Bronze went to Norway’s Pal Haugen Lillefosse (5.75 m). Renaud Lavillenie (FRA) gambled. The ex-world record holder missed the 5.75 m, but then broke three times at 5.85 m.

The Swiss Dominik Alberto, who had jumped 5.65 m in the qualification, failed three times at the starting height of 5.50 meters. “This high entry was a challenge for me,” admitted the 30-year-old. “Some jumps would have been high enough, but didn’t have enough depth.”

4x400m women: Bol with 400m gold triple

Femke Bol is the outstanding track athlete of the title fights in Munich. After gold in the 400m and 400m hurdles, the 22-year-old led the Dutch 4x400m relay to the title. In 3:20.87 minutes, the “Oranje” quartet was more than a second ahead of the Poles and Brits, who shared the other medals among themselves. The Swiss relay came in 7th.

Matthew Hudson-Smith, Charles Dobson, Lewis Davey and Alex Haydock-Wilson ran in 2:59.35 to win the relay gold for Great Britain. Belgium’s anchor Dylan Borlée could not quite catch up despite an impressive final sprint. 14 hundredths were missing for the European title. The Bronze-placed French were just 15 more hundredths behind.
