EC wants to heavily tax companies violating Russia sanctions

BRUSSELS, Dec 2 (Reuters) – The European Commission presented a proposal on Friday to impose a tax of at least 5% of their turnover on companies circumventing European sanctions against Russia.

This proposal, which must be approved by the European Parliament and the member countries of the EU, also provides, in order to harmonize the position of the Twenty-Seven, to criminalize individual violations, which would be punishable by prison sentences of at least five years.

Some member countries impose criminal penalties for violations, others administrative penalties.

“Too many differences remain between member countries when it comes to the punishment for violating EU sanctions,” EU Justice Commissioner Didier Reynders said in a statement. (Written by Charlotte Van Campenhout, French version Jean-Stéphane Brosse, edited by Blandine Hénault)
