The French are more and more inclined to equip themselves with a second-hand product.

If it concerns a wide range of products, the refurbished market mainly appeals to smartphone enthusiasts.

The share of refurbished goods is increasing in France

For some years now, various companies, but also some brands themselves, have been offering users so-called “reconditioned” products. Generally, these are smartphones, computers, game consoles and other audio speakers in near new condition and guaranteed to work. This of course allows significant savings to be made compared to the price of new.

The latest IFOP barometer (carried out in October among 1,201 people) shows that the purchasing decision of users of refurbished telephones is increasingly motivated by price and the environment. Some platforms such as mobile.club offer a rental system for refurbished smartphones, including iPhones and Samsung Galaxys.

The refurbished smartphone interests more than 60% of French people

According to data gleaned by the IFOP, more than 6 out of 10 French people (62% very precisely) say they have bought or intend to buy a refurbished smartphone, an upward trend of 6% compared to 2021.

However, this figure drops by half (31%) for refurbished computers. However, even if this market is struggling to find a place, the satisfaction rate it generates is high. In fact, 73% of buyers expressed their intention to use this method again in the future.

Among the elements that encourage you to opt for a refurbished smartphone, we find the price, of course, but also the guarantee and the preservation of the environment. Conversely, the main fears vis-à-vis this market relate to a shorter lifespan, an overall less reliable product, not to mention a questionable guarantee.

In 2022, 7% of French people aged 18 to 65 say they have already bought a refurbished phone for themselves or for those around them, double compared to 2018. At more than 60%, it is marketplaces and others web-based reconditioning specialists who are the most popular for this type of purchase.

How to choose a refurbished product?

Unpacked and/or used, passed through a factory specializing in the refurbishment of electrical and electronic devices, then repackaged and offered for sale at a very advantageous price, refurbished high-tech products are popular with consumers.
