Ecological revolution: with the CoffeeB coffee pod, Café Royal declares the final aluminum

3

Creator of the CoffeeB, Café Royal declares war on aluminum capsules, a real ecological scourge. This new pod takes the form of a ball of compressed coffee without packaging and 100% compostable. An unprecedented innovation.

The novelty of Café Royal is likely to make big waves in the world of coffee. The Swiss manufacturer is indeed announcing an alternative to plastic and aluminum capsules, which are particularly polluting. CoffeeB takes the form of a ball of compressed coffee, coated in a very thin 100% vegetable envelope. It is therefore designed without plastic or aluminum and can be composted after use. The CoffeeB retains the simplicity of a capsule since it adopts an individual format: one scoop = one coffee.

The brand ensures that the taste properties of the coffee are preserved, it should not remain in the open air at the risk of oxidizing. If the vegetable film enveloping the coffee helps in its preservation, the pod box also participates. Made from molded fibers, it would keep the product fresh for nearly 14 months and three months once opened. Always with a view to upgrading, the packaging ends its existence in the yellow bins, heading for recycling.

Each box can contain nine balls of coffee and the range is available in eight varieties: espresso, espresso forte, lungo, lungo forte, ristretto and decaffeinato, as well as two certified organic recipes.

The most ecological pod

With this innovation, Café Royal declares war on the plastic or aluminum coffee capsule. And it was time! Remember that coffee is on the podium of the most consumed beverages in the world. The French are very fond of it since almost 60% consume it daily. In total, it is a billion capsules used and thrown away per year. In the enddespite recycling circuits, only 25% of them will be recycled, whereas aluminum is 100% recyclable.

To make things better, Nespresso, Nestlé and JDE (Jacobs Douwe Egberts) created the Aluminum Capsule Recycling Alliance in 2019, which aims to simplify sorting and recycle 100% of aluminum capsules. For this, collection points have been set up and the recycling channel has been developed. If this initiative goes in the right direction, we can only salute the innovation of Café Royal. The absence of waste is better than recycled waste!

How the pricing table works

The problem with this small coffee ball is obviously its compatibility with devices. Currently, each machine works with a specific capsule, whether flexible, aluminum or plastic. None can accommodate CoffeeB.

Café Royal therefore offers a coffee machine specially designed for its new pods: the Globe. In off-white or matte black, it can accommodate the nine balls at its top waiting to be eaten. A 1.3L water tank accompanies the 37.3cm high, 15.3cm wide and 26.7cm deep machine.

To obtain a drink, the Globe begins by moistening the ball of coffee in order to soften it. The machine then presses the pod, perforates it and injects water into it. This is when the coffee is extracted at a pressure of between 7 and 12 bar (the pump can peak at 19 bar).

Café Royal markets the coffee machine and its pods in stores, notably at Auchan and Carrefour, as well as online on reseller sites such as La Fnac, Darty and Boulanger. It is already possible to buy the Globe at a price of 179 €. The capsules are available from €3.49 per box. Each coffee then costs less than 39 cents, identical to the price requested by Nespresso.
