Ecological transition: Minister Christophe Béchu announces a “training time” for mayors

This time should make it possible to “look territory by territory” at the “consequences” of climate change.

A territorial approach. Invited on RTL on Tuesday 22 November, Christophe Béchu, Minister for Ecological Transition, announced the establishment of a “training time” and of “sensitizationfor local elected officials. This will be organizedby services and agenciesof his ministry, like Météo France, Ademe (Agency for the environment and energy management) or the French Office for Biodiversity.

After a summer marked by heat waves and sometimes unprecedented drought, followed by a particularly mild autumn, the minister therefore wants to focus on the specific situations that cross French territory. The goal is notnot only (to) look at the situation on a world scale“, but to take into account an already effective and concrete global warming. It is therefore “look, territory by territory, at what the consequences of climate change already are, and how we can take measures to mitigate it and to adapt to it.»

This training for city councilors will not be compulsory, and therefore offered on a voluntary basis. According to Christophe Béchu, the department of Indre has already tested this new exercise. The latter would have brought together251 elected officials, (i.e.) a little more than the total number of municipalities“. “In fact, we see that there are mayors who declined because they had already taken training (…), but there are many who insisted on coming, including with a deputy , with an elected representative in charge of these issues“, explained the minister. Which concluded that the approach knew “a clear success“.
