Economy Citroën, DS, Jeep, Skoda, Mini… who owns these brands?


Developing, protecting its market share, even if it means absorbing its competitor to continue to exist or forming groups to obtain a critical size, this is the phase in which many manufacturers find themselves.

At VAG, the group has chosen to create platforms on which it is possible to easily develop models with different shapes. The development towards electric and luxury with emblematic brands like Porsche or Bugatti are part of the objectives.

Marriage of convenience

Stellantis is moving towards sustainable objectives by strongly developing electric mobility but also internationally with a target of 25% of turnover outside Europe and the United States; another pillar of development is represented by connectivity, which should generate around twenty billion euros over the next ten years.

With its fifteen automotive brands, Stellantis will focus on its Premium and luxury brands while implementing the reduction of fixed costs.

Distribution of brands

The Stellantis group operates and markets fifteen automobile brands, including five from the PSA Group: Citroën, DS Automobiles, Opel, Peugeot and Vauxhall and ten from FCA (Fiat Chrysler): Abarth, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat Automobiles, Fiat Professional , Jeep, Lancia, Maserati and Ram.

Volkswagen group operates twelve brands: Audi, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, MAN trucks, Porsche, Scania trucks, Seat/Cupra, Skoda, VW Commercial vehicles and the Ducati motorcycle brand.

Ford Motors company owns the Ford brand, Ford trucks and Lincoln in the United States.

General Motors includes the following brands: Buick, Cami Automotive, Cadillac, Baojun, Chevrolet, GMC, On Star, Faw Jiefang and Wuling.

Within the Alliance, there are Renault, Nissan and Mitsubishi; Renault Group owns: Renault, Alpine, Dacia, Samsung and 47% of Lada/Avtovaz. As for Nissan, the brand operates the brands Nissan, Datsun, Infiniti, Venucia and 34% of Mitsubishi Motors.

Daimler AG owns the following brands: Mercedes-Benz, Smart, AMG, Fuso, Setra, Bharat Benz (India), Freightliner, Western Star and Thomas Built.

BMW has in its ranks: BMW, Mini, Rolls-Royce as well as the Motorsport, Motorad and M divisions.

Toyota, with its 10.5 million vehicles sold in 2021, is the world’s leading manufacturer; it owns the Toyota, Lexus and Daihatsu brands.

Present in the motorcycle and automobile market, Honda controls Honda automobiles and the Acura subsidiary present in North America.

SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation) is China’s leading automaker with 5.6 million cars produced. In addition to Roewe, which manufactures old Land Rovers, it owns SAIC Volkswagen (a joint venture), Hongyan (Iveco) and Nanjing Automobile, which owns MG Motor.

Geely, a Chinese group, owns Geely, Link & Co, Lotus, Proton and Volvo.

Indian group Tata owns Tata Motors, Jaguar and Land Rover.

The Korean group Hyundai owns Hyundai motors, Kia motors and Genesis.

The Independents

Among this nebula of automotive groups, there are still a few free electrons. The Japanese Suzuki, manufacturer of automobiles, motorcycles and boat engines has a Maruti Suzuki subsidiary in addition to its activities.

Aston Martin belongs to a consortium led by David Richards, John Sinders and two Kuwaiti companies. Subaru, a specialist in all-wheel-drive cars, is owned by industrial giant Fuji Heavy Industries; he collaborates regularly with Toyota.

Isuzu is a Japanese manufacturer specializing in utility 4x4s (D-Max in Europe) and medium-tonnage trucks. Mazda, of which Ford owns 3.5%, McLaren, Tesla and Ferrari are also independent brands.
