QUITO, January 22 (Reuters) – The Ecuadorian army announced on Monday the seizure of 22 tonnes of cocaine following an operation lasting several months in the country.
The military said in a statement that the drugs, distributed in 733 packages, were likely intended for export to Asia, Europe and the American continent. The seizure followed six months of preparation and monitoring, she added.
The Ecuadorian military shared videos on X showing huge packages wrapped in plastic, some bearing the names of major airlines.
Quito, which faces “an internal armed conflict”, launched an anti-gang operation which led to the arrest of more than 2,700 people in thirteen days. (Alexandra Valencia in Quito; French version Zhifan Liu)
