Ed Sheeran is still reeling from the death of his friend Jamal Edwards. On stage he burst into tears during “Eyes closed”.

At an exclusive appearance as part of the live performance series “Apple Music Live” in London, Ed Sheeran (32) presented the songs from his new album “Subtract”. Before beginning the song “Eyes closed,” he addressed the assembled audience to say that playing this particular song was not easy for him.

The song is inspired by Jamal Edwards (1990-2022), his longtime friend who passed away in February 2022. “The first time I played this song, I cried. I cried when I introduced it, I cried when I sang it, I cried at the end, and I’m going to cry now,” he said the singer continues.

After this speech, the Briton, known for his soulful ballads, grabbed a towel and wiped the tears from his face. “That’s going to happen a lot at this gig,” he warned his fans before he and his twelve-piece band got started.

“Wherever I look, I still see you”

The song, dedicated to Edwards, reads, among other things, “And life just goes on / So I dance with my eyes closed / For wherever I look, I still see you”. in one Interview with ZDF In April of this year, Sheeran spoke about his process of grieving, which he still hasn’t completed. In addition to therapy, it helped him a lot to put his grief into music.

There he said: “I feel like my way of self-therapy has always been to just write the songs down. Whenever I’ve been feeling happy, sad, angry, depressed or whatever, I let it out .”
