Eddie Van Halen: Poignant words from his wife

The rock legend Eddie Van Halen died at the age of 65. His wife, ex-wife and bandmates say goodbye to him.

After a long battle with cancer, Eddie Van Halen (1955-2020) died at the age of 65, like his son Wolfgang (29) announced on Twitter. Janie Van Halen (born 1970), the guitarist's widow, Valerie Bertinelli (60), the ex-wife of the rock legend and band members of Van Halen ("Jump") said goodbye to the musician on social media.

Eddie Van Halen's widow, who he was married to since 2009, said on Instagram that her heart and soul were "split into a million pieces". She did not know that it was even possible "to cry so many tears or to feel such incredible sadness". The joint journey of the two was not always easy, but in the end a love remains that will last forever. Saying goodbye is the hardest thing for her that she has ever had to do, which is why she prefers to say: "I will see you again soon in a place where there is no pain and no sorrow.

His ex-wife also mourns

"When I met you 40 years ago, my life changed forever", writes Bertinelli. Eddie Van Halen gave her "this one, true light in my life", their son Wolfgang. The guitarist never lost his "wonderful mood and that mischievous grin" during his treatment. She was grateful that she and her son could be with him in the musician's final moments. "I'll see you in our next life, my love." In addition, she published an old picture of the three, in which "Wolfie" is still a baby.

Also Sammy Hagar (72), Michael Anthony (66) and David Lee Roth (65), three former bandmates of Eddie Van Halen, spoke up. Both Anthony and Hagar stated that they were "heartbroken" and that they had no words. "What a long, great trip it has been," wrote David Lee Roth.
