Edf: 10-year electricity contract with the Trimet aluminum smelter

PARIS (Reuters) – EDF will sign a new ten-year contract with Trimet France on Monday to supply electricity to the aluminum plant in Saint-Jean de Maurienne (Savoie) at prices below market prices, the cabinets of the Ministers for Energy Transition and Industry.

The contract covers a volume of 22 terawatt-hours (TWh) supplied from the beginning of 2024. It follows a previous ten-year contract between EDF and Trimet France, 65% owned by the German family company Trimet and 35% by the French public electrician.

The agreement provides for a “significant” initial fixed premium – known as an “advance in the lead” – paid to EDF at the start of the contract and a sharing of the risks allowing prices to be lowered, said a source at the office of the Minister Delegate in charge of l industry, Roland Lescure.

The agreement was concluded under “atypical conditions” but demonstrates the will of the State, which has once again become EDF’s sole shareholder, to “build a framework in which the electrical tool is at the service of the country’s industrial competitiveness “, we also pointed out to the cabinet of the Minister for Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher.

While the Minister will attend the signing of the contract on Monday in the presence of EDF CEO Luc Rémont in particular before visiting the dam and the Grand’Maison power plant (Isère), his cabinet reaffirmed the State’s wish that the park French hydroelectric “remains, in one way or another, under public control”.

Paris has been trying for years to avoid competition between the hydroelectric concessions operated by EDF. The government also defends a reform of the European electricity market, currently under negotiation, which would allow French households and industrialists to benefit from competitive prices, thanks in particular to nuclear power.
