EDF HAS STOPPED A CATTENOM REACTOR FOR CHECKS ON THE WELDS, ACCORDING TO THE NUCLEAR SAFETY AUTHORITY

PARIS (Reuters) – The Nuclear Safety Authority (ASN) informed Luxembourg on Thursday that EDF shut down reactor 3 of its Cattenom nuclear power plant in Moselle in March, a letter seen by Reuters on Friday shows. after the government of the Grand Duchy expressed its concern about the security of the site located near its border.

“EDF shut down this reactor in March in order to recheck the welds concerned, which confirmed the presence of indications. However, given the performance of the inspection means used, it is not possible at this stage to decide on the presence of cracks and their origin”, declared the ASN.

The French group will soon start cutting the parts of the circuit concerned for expertise, added ASN.

The French authority specifies that the inspections of reactors 1 and 2 did not reveal any stress corrosion cracking and that EDF has also recently initiated inspections on reactor 4.
