(CercleFinance.com) – EDF announced last night that it had been contacted by the French state to provide an irradiation service at the Civaux nuclear power plant, in Vienne.
The project, which will be carried out in collaboration with the CEA, must consist of inserting material into the reactor core with a view to making it radioactive.
Sébastien Lecornu, the Minister of the Armed Forces, explained yesterday during a trip to Civaux that it was a question of exploiting the power of the two reactors by irradiating them with special materials containing lithium.
Once irradiated, these compounds will be transferred to a CEA site in order to produce tritium, a rare gas essential for nuclear deterrent weapons.
The French electrician specifies that this additional additional activity will be added to its main mission, that is to say the production of electricity, which will remain unchanged.
In a press release, the group emphasizes that this request from the government will not have an impact on the operation of the plant and that there are no plans to extend this complementary activity to other reactors in the park.
Its implementation also remains subject to the Nuclear Safety Authority.
An agreement between the State, the CEA and EDF must now be concluded in order to establish the scope of activities and the rights and obligations of each party.
