Edge 97: Update brings Automatic HTTPS and closes 29 security holes

After Google recently upgraded its Chrome browser to version 97, Microsoft is now stepping up and distributing Edge 97 with immediate effect. The update provides numerous improvements and bug fixes, but also closes a large number of security leaks. Microsoft lists 29 fixed vulnerabilities in its security update guide. COMPUTER BILD therefore advises all users of the Microsoft browser under Windows, macOS and Linux: Install version 97.0.1072.55 soon. If you haven’t received the update yet, use one of the following downloads to bring Edge up to date.

Edge Chromium for Windows

Edge 97 comes with Automatic HTTPS

Microsoft already activated the feature called “Automatic HTTPS” for testers in the preview version of Edge 92. Now the company from Redmond (Washington state) is gradually releasing the function for all users. If you have activated it in the settings, Edge will first look for an encrypted connection via HTTPS when surfing instead of using the unencrypted HTTP. If desired, it can be set so that Edge only uses HTTPS. To do this, select the option “Always switch from HTTP to HTTPS (connection errors can occur more frequently)”. Then, for example, when you go to “http://example.com/”, Edge automatically updates the page to “https://example.com/”.

If the Auto-HTTPS function has not yet appeared in your settings, switch it on using the flags. How to proceed:

  1. Tap edge: // flags # edge-automatic-https in the address bar and press Enter.
  2. Switch the option to “Enabled”.
  3. Restart Edge.

The new feature ensures that your connections to websites automatically switch from HTTP to HTTPS.

From now on you will see below edge: // settings / privacy in the “Security” area the entry “Automatically switch to other secure connections with automatic HTTPS”. Further details on Automatic HTTPS can be found on the Microsoft blog.

Other new features in Edge 97

In addition to Automatic HTTPS, Microsoft is delivering additional feature updates with Edge 97. This includes the new citation function, which makes it easier for schoolchildren and students to collect source references. Details on the function can be found in this blog post. Microsoft lists all other innovations in the release notes.
