Edge of Tomorrow 2: where is this project with Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt?

On the occasion of the broadcast tonight on TMC of Edge of Tomorrow, what about a sequel, announced but still not confirmed? We take stock of this project which should bring together Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt again.

Edge of Tomorrow, released 8 years ago, seduced the press and the public with its playful approach to science fiction, a sort of cross between Groundhog Day and a war film, where a commander, stuck in a time loop , was to battle hordes of aliens in 2020.

The film had brought in approximately $370 million in revenue worldwide, and attracted more than 1.2 million spectators in France.

A sequel was announced in 2015, a year after its release, still worn by Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt and with Doug Liman directing. His title? Live Die Repeat and Repeat. The director of Mr. & Mrs. Smith did not hide his enthusiasm in 2017 and announced that he wanted to favor characters over action: “You do the first movie kind of like a publicity campaign to advertise a sequel, so now you don’t need as much action, and in the case of Edge of Tomorrow, audiences obviously loved the comedy and the situation”. He also teased the arrival of a new character who would steal the show from Blunt and Cruise.

Warner Bros.

With a busy schedule, the filmmaker had to postpone the project: he was in the running to direct Justice League Dark. As for Tom Cruise, he was busy with Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation and Fallout as well as The Mummy while Blunt was preparing Mary Poppins Returns. At the start of 2018, Liman confirmed that the screenplay was complete. Yet a year later, Warner Bros. announced that it had found its screenwriter in the person of Matthew Robinson (The Invention of Lying, Monster Cars, Dora and the Lost City).

In October 2019, Doug Liman confirmed to the ComicBookMovie site that Edge of Tomorrow 2 was only a matter of time, once the filming of the next Mission: Impossible was completed: “I hope it will happen. If so, it will be the right time”. While Emily Blunt has filmed Jungle Cruise and Quietly 2 and Liman Chaos Walking, it seems that the future of Edge of Tomorrow is in the hands of Tom Cruise who will have to find space in his schedule to find Major Bill Cage.

The latest twist about the project dates back to last February. It is rumored that the project could finally become… a series! A journalist has indeed shared on social networks

In these tweets, we therefore learn that Warner Bros would have made the decision to embark on the production of a TV series adapted from Edge of Tomorrow, against the backdrop of legal complications with Village Roadshow. New to be taken with a grain of salt therefore, because not specified by the respective studios. Nothing seems fixed yet because of this legal dispute. To be continued !

Finally, remember that Tom Cruise will soon be honored at the Cannes Film Festival where he will present Top Gun Maverick.
