Skateboarder wants to defy broken arm shock

For the first time, the skateboarders are at the Olympic Games. Tyler Edtmayer is allowed to represent Germany in the park discipline. But now this dream threatens to burst. The 20-year-old breaks his arm during training. But that doesn’t mean the end for the national coach.

Skateboarder Tyler Edtmayer is fighting for his Olympic dream. The 20-year-old is threatened with death five days before the park premiere. The man from Lenggries broke his arm during a training session in the Olympic skate park, he shared via Instagram: “I don’t know if I can skate at the games.” He also posted a photo from the hospital with an arm sling and a left arm bandaged to the elbow. During today’s training session, he just watched.

Skateboard national trainer Jürgen Horrwarth said: “It was an unfortunate accident during training, just bad luck and went extremely stupid.” Nevertheless, Horrwarth gives hope: “I think he will start when he is mentally up to date again,” said the national coach and also referred to the Olympic ranking points that would expire in the event of a non-start. “It’s not the best thing for him, but you have to make the best of it now,” said Horrwarth.

“If theoretically everyone would fuck up …”

The first park competition in Olympic history starts on Thursday (from 2 a.m. CEST / ZDF and Eurosport). “The fact that my sport is now and that I can also be there is super cool and really overwhelming,” Edtmayer said before leaving for Tokyo: “The Olympics will be a highlight that will always be remembered.”

The goal was the world number 26. so far a top 10 placement, only the best eight athletes qualify for the final. “If theoretically everyone would screw up and I drive super well, then I would make it,” said Edtmayer. That has probably become more unrealistic.

His teammate, 14-year-old Lilly Stoephasius, will also be in the bowl. The Berliner is the youngest Olympic participant in the German Tokyo delegation and starts on Wednesday (from 2 a.m. / ARD and Eurosport) also in the park. This discipline is driven in a kind of swimming pool with obstacles and consists of spectacular flight elements.
