It sounds too good to be true: You are entitled to 5 days of educational leave too! Extra paid vacation, just like that? Yes, exactly! And it doesn’t even have to be the mean Excel course.
Almost nobody knows about this legal regulation: this vacation entitlement is only used by just under two percent of employees! With the magic word “Educational leave“You are entitled to five to ten vacation days per year in addition to your annual vacation. According to the Bildungsurlaubsgesetz, 27 million employees in Germany are allowed to attend recognized educational seminars for up to ten days. Anyone who thinks of Excel courses and dusty advanced training is only half correct Because the following offers also fall under the “Education” category.
Educational vacation: surfing, paragliding and yoga
The list of recognized educational seminars for which you will be granted leave is long. Of course, this also includes subject-specific workshops, management training, advanced training and study trips. But surfing on Fuerteventura, paragliding in the mountains, yoga, Pilates or a Spanish language trip are also possible!
You wonder to what extent this is still educational leave? Quite simply: All of these activities help us to develop and to work productively in the long term – physically and mentally. Health-oriented educational leave helps us to discover new methods to strengthen our body and mind so that we can develop our full potential at work. For example, if you are struggling with back problems, you can learn suitable exercises with yoga, Pilates or Tai Chi, which you can continue at home.
If we continue our education, our employer will of course also benefit from it: Regardless of whether this is the better use of a computer program or that we can work more concentrated and thus more effectively. Personal training is particularly useful in the psychological area. Because also courses for coping with stress and burn-out prophylaxis are offered, as well as a course on body-oriented stress and trauma resolution on Sylt or fasting hiking. Offers like this are even subsidized by health insurances, as are many educational leave in the field of health prevention. Other events must be paid for by the participants themselves.
It’s that easy to get to your vacation
What sounds like a lot of research and comparisons has now been made easier for us by a start-up. On the website “Bildungsurlauber.de” you can book a suitable course according to location, period and topic. The consultation process is completely automated, so that you only have to sign at the end. By the way, you have to apply for educational leave 6 weeks before the start of the course.
But there is also bad news for Bavaria and Saxony: The statutory regulation does not apply here and you are therefore not entitled to any educational leave.
