He hasn’t completely disappeared from the radar since the end of Mentalist, but let’s recognize that since then, Simon Baker has no longer been in the news. This is perhaps the end of the desert crossing for the Australian actor who appears completely transformed for his next film.
The actor totally surprised his fans by revealing his new look for his role in Limbo, the new film from Australian filmmaker Ivan Sen. In the trailer (above) for the film which was presented as an official selection at the last Berlinale, Simon Baker appears with short hair, a growing beard and tattoos.
A look like Walter White from Breaking Bad, although the character he plays doesn’t take the same direction at all.
The film – shot entirely in black and white – follows Travis Hurley, played by Simon Baker, who arrives in a small town in the Australian outback to investigate the unsolved homicide of an Aboriginal woman, twenty years previously. .
Connecting with the victim’s family, Travis uncovers a series of difficult truths, highlighting the complexities of the injustice suffered by Aboriginal people.
How he got into the skin of his character
In an interview with Collider, the actor spoke about his working process during the filming of this film. He did not engage in the in-depth research that other actors sometimes undertake. However, he clarified that the process was “different every time” for him.
For Limbo, getting into the skin of his character required going through “three thousand five hundred kilometers from Sydney to where we were filming. I have an old VW Transporter. It was my trailer, I drove it and camped along the way“.
While research wasn’t necessarily part of Baker’s method, he used the time in his trailer to think about the character and how it had developed since the pre-production stages.

“I was thinking about the character off and on, for about a year, when Ivan and I started talking about the project. And then it got to a certain point where we were there one day, during preproduction, and Ivan took the camera.
We were doing hair, makeup and wardrobe, and he picked up the camera and we went to one of the filming locations, which was right in the city. Everything was done on site. Nothing has been built, and almost nothing has been dressed.”
He said that once the camera started rolling, “something happened, and the whole physical nature of the character clicked into place. Then it’s just about holding on to that and trusting“.
