Eighth generation – New BMW R 1300 GS: Lighter, stronger, matrix LEDs

Exactly on the day the first BMW motorcycle was presented 100 years ago, BMW also presented the latest, now eighth, GS generation in Berlin. The R 1300 GS can do everything better than its seven predecessors, which have been built more than a million times.

The new BMW R 1300 GS is preparing to become the most powerful and universal GS in the GS history, which has now spanned 43 years. “Next level of GS” is what BMW titled the presentation of the R 1300 GS in the best English. The aim is to achieve a higher level not only with an even larger and stronger two-cylinder boxer engine with 107 kW/145 hp, but also with more intelligent technology in conjunction with a weight reduced by 12 kilograms compared to the R 1250 GS. The ready-to-drive curb weight is 237 kg with the 19-liter tank 90% full. Larger, but also more compact. Both the water-cooled engine with variable valve timing, which is now exactly 1300 cubic centimeters in size, and the entire chassis have been redesigned. As before, the front and rear wheels are guided by a Telelever or a one-armed Paralever construction, but all components have been technically improved. This also applies to transmissions, brakes, electronics and ergonomics. Despite having more displacement and power as well as increased driving capabilities, the R 1300 GS is more compact than the previous model thanks to its more compact drive unit. New, intelligent chassis Of course, new technology has also found its way into the R 1300 GS. A new electronic chassis with the abbreviation DSA (Dynamic Suspension Adjustment) was developed, in which the damping, spring rate and load compensation are adjusted automatically depending on the selected driving mode. For the first time there is vehicle height control; When standing still and driving slowly, the seat height is reduced from 85 to 82 centimeters. The brakes are also new, incorporating fully integral ABS including lean angle competence. There are special programs for off-road use.Light sensation: Matrix LEDs!Wheel and tire sizes with 19 or 17 inch rim diameters remain unchanged. For the first time on the GS, adaptive cruise control is available as well as a lane change warning and a front collision warning, which are also based on radar technology. The additional components required for this are virtually undetectable. For the first time in the two-wheeler sector, a Matrix LED headlight is on board – and as standard! Integrated cornering lights cost extra. The new BMW R 1300 GS will be available in a white painted basic version as well as the Triple Black, GS Trophy and Option 719 Tramuntana variants. In addition to its special three-color paint, the Triple Black has, among other things, a higher, electrically adjustable windshield. The GS Trophy variant is equipped for off-road use and is equipped with cross-spoke wheels and radiator grilles. The Option 719 Tramuntana variant is designed as a luxury GS: the focus is on a primarily green paint finish, the electric windshield with a high disc and wire-spoke wheels with gold-colored light alloy rims. There are newly developed Vario cases to suit all vehicles. All four versions of the R 1300 GS will go on sale in November; the base price is 21,990 euros.
