Elden Ring: The map keeps changing!


All Elden Ring players know this, the Underworld is vast and above all, ruthless. From Necrolimbo to Mount Gelmir, passing through the red lands of Caelid, the landscapes are very diverse, and the creatures too! You will understand, you have nothing to get bored during your epic adventure. But while this monumental and more than varied map is giving a lot of splinterless a hard time, it could well be that in addition… She changes.

A living map

Just like a living being, it would therefore seem that the map of Elden Ring evolves and experiences some occasional changes. But why? The reason is very simple, the various updates of FromSoftware’s latest game. A Youtuber by the name of illusory walls noticed these slight differences between the various versions of Elden Ring, and put them together in a video.

We thus notice that, as patches 1.02, 1.03 and 1.04 progress, the map evolves very slightly and certain areas are partially reworked by the FromSoftware teams. Trees, roads or even lakes disappear (or appear), and the Shardless must therefore adapt to these changes which sometimes can be quite disabling. Some deplore the disappearance of a bridge in the Necrolimbo, once very useful to pass beyond a chasm. Others rejoice at the discovery of illusory walls, thinking they had hallucinated seeing the map being modified.

The most impressive changes are those made to the Peaks of the Giants (around 2:30 p.m. on the video), where entire buildings are moved.

But why change the map?

This is the question that many Elden Ring players ask themselves, and the various answers remain very subjective. It is quite possible that the FromSoftware teams will be very attentive to feedback from the Sans-splinters on the weaknesses of the map, and then work on it in order to get as close as possible to the “perfect” Underworld.

Another possible reason for this low movement in the various areas of the game, a desire to want to stop the speedrunners. It is true that several times in the past, the FromSoftware teams have implemented various patches with the aim of nerfing the speedrunners, that is, fixing the bugs they use for their discipline. Patch 1.03, released in March, seriously nerfed speedrunners, with a significant decrease in the effectiveness of abilities used for runs, but also the disappearance of rocks and/or roads that could be accessed by a bug.

In any case, certainly these changes brought by the various patches are present but they remain minimal and have not even been noticed by most players. Don’t worry, they won’t change your experience in the Underworld in any way!
