Brantner wants to run for the chairmanship of the Greens

The Greens chairmen Habeck and Baerbock are no longer allowed to lead the party as soon as they take over ministries. That is what the party statutes want it to be. Foreign politician Franziska Brantner wants to enter the race as a potential successor. Two other candidates are under discussion.

The Greens foreign politician Franziska Brantner wants to run for the chairmanship of her party after “Spiegel” information. Several Greens had confirmed that the 42-year-old was determined to run as chairwoman, the magazine reported. The member of the Bundestag belongs to the Realo wing of the party. The Greens are expected to elect a new party executive in January.

Brantner himself responded to “Spiegel” when asked evasively about possible ambitions. “I think now the focus should be on the coalition negotiations and the formation of a government,” said the foreign and European expert. “I supported our board of directors with all my might.”

The previous Greens chairmen Robert Habeck and Annalena Baerbock are no longer allowed to lead the party if they take over ministries. So far, there have been no official applications for her successor. The current vice-party leader Ricarda Lang and member of the Bundestag Omid Nouripour, who could run as a leadership duo, are under discussion as candidates. Lang belongs to the left wing of the party, Nouripour is Realo.

The Green Party statutes stipulate that members of the party’s federal executive committee may not be members of the government at the same time. After a transitional period of eight months at the latest, they must resign from one of the offices.
