Electric car: Ionity’s new prices are shaking up the fast charging market


With its recent price drop, Ionity is reshuffling the cards when it comes to pricing fast charging networks for electric cars and plug-in hybrids. We therefore wanted to come back to the prices of the various networks present in France, after a first comparison last April, then a second in June.

Ionity finally average

Ionity now charges €0.59/kWh for charging in France and €0.39/kWh for subscribers to the Ionity Passport offer. This represents a significant drop of €0.10/kWh.

Thus, while Ionity previously closed the ranking, its new tariff puts the charging network on the same level as its competitor Fastned. Above all, the Ionity Passport subscription, billed at €11.99/month and profitable from 60 kWh of recharge per month, is becoming very well placed.

However, it remains more expensive than the IECharge network, as well as the Superchargers for subscribers to the premium offer at €12.99/month. Tesla’s charging network has different rates depending on the stations, for an average of only around €0.30/kWh for drivers who have taken out the subscription, made profitable after 130 kWh of monthly charging, and €0.40/ kWh for others. In addition, drivers of the brand’s electric cars automatically benefit from this advantageous rate, without having to invest in the premium subscription. Please note, however, that Supercharger charging prices increase between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m., reaching an average of €0.34/kWh for members and €0.44/kWh for non-members.

The example of a Paris-Marseille round trip in MG4 64 kWh

In order to make these tariffs more meaningful, especially to users of thermal cars, it is interesting to use an example. We have chosen to simulate a Paris-Marseille round trip (about 1700 km) with the compact electric MG4, in its 64 kWh version. To establish our calculations, we relied on the estimated consumption for our MG4 and the routes proposed by the planner ABetterRoutePlanner (ABRP). However, all the charging networks mentioned above do not allow this journey to be made, hence the absence of some of them.

Thus, it is by using Tesla Superchargers that a Paris-Marseille round trip is the cheapest. It costs €96.2 for subscribers to the charging network and €110.9 for others. At Ionity, you would have to pay €109.2 by subscribing to the Ionity Passport offer, or €165.2 otherwise. Finally, TotalEnergies is in last place with a bill of €173.2.

Admittedly, we simulated a departure with a 100% charged battery, which amounts to adding around fifteen euros for home charging beforehand to the overall note for the trip, but these prices remain for the most part lower than what would have cost the same round trip in a thermal car. It would thus cost around €150 for a compact diesel and nearly €200 for a petrol model.
