Electric cars: sales in Europe reached record levels in November 2022

With approximately 281,000 electric cars registered in November 2022 in Europe, the sector has set a new record. This represents a 26% increase in sales compared to the same period in 2021. For their part, the results of plug-in hybrid vehicles are again in the green.

If the automotive market is going through a particularly difficult year 2022, marked in particular by semiconductor shortages, sales of electric cars have never been so high. In November 2022, one in five new cars was electric in France. EVs and plug-in hybrid models accounted for 21.4% of the French market.

However, the journalist José Pontes has just revealed on the CleanTechnica site the number of electric and hybrid cars registered over this same period, in Europe this time. Thereby, around 281,500 rechargeable electric cars have found takers on the Old Continent in November 2022. This represents an increase of 26% compared to November 2021.

New monthly record for electric car sales in Europe

Note that this is a new monthly record (the previous being 280,000 units sold in December 2021). If we have fun making the distinction between 100% electric and plug-in hybrid models, BEVs represented 62% of sales in November 2022, which brings the annual average at 60%.

For their part, plug-in hybrid cars are finally showing encouraging results. We note a growth of 19% in November 2022, for 106,000 registered registrations. Note that that this is the first six-figure sales result operated by PHEVs since June 2021.

However, as mentioned by EV Volume Data, things could change in the coming months, in particular due to the end of purchase aid for hybrid cars in several European countries. “We might be able to hit something like 80% BEV versus 20% PHEV by the end of 2023″, says Jose Pontes.

Regarding the most popular models, we find unsurprisingly at the top of the ranking the Tesla Model Y, with 19,543 registrations, followed by the Tesla Model 3 with 12,269 recorded sales. The third place on the podium is occupied by the Ford Kuga hybrid with 8,102 copies sold. We suspect that sales of the American manufacturer’s SUV have been stimulated by the imminent end of purchase aid for hybrids, especially in Germany and France. The 4th and 5th places are taken by the Volkswagen ID.4 (7,391 sales) and ID.5 (6,950 sales).
