That’s what the documentary is about

Switzerland has an electricity problem in winter: around a third of the electricity then comes from abroad. The problem this winter: It is unclear whether enough French nuclear power plants will go back online and whether Germany will get enough gas to continue to supply Switzerland with electricity.

In the future, however, this electricity problem could become even more serious: Switzerland already lacks an electricity agreement with the EU. And because of tightened regulations, the serious question will arise from 2025: will the EU still reliably supply Switzerland with electricity

In addition, from 2030 the phase-out of nuclear power will begin. It has not yet been finally clarified where the electricity will come from. And by 2050, Switzerland wants to become climate-neutral. This means that the demand for electricity will steadily increase.

Irrespective of the Ukraine crisis, Switzerland urgently needs to secure its power supply – especially for the winter. “NZZ Format” traveled the country and asked energy suppliers, politicians and conservationists: What has to happen so that Switzerland will have enough electricity in the future?
