In the shadow of gas prices, however, electricity prices are also climbing higher and higher. Due to long-term supply contracts, the expensive tsunami will not reach the citizens until the beginning of 2023 – but all the more violent.

Electricity price could rise to 50 cents per kilowatt hour in 2023

The price of electricity is set to rise to a good 50 cents per kilowatt hour, according to calculations by the CAR Institute (source: Handelsblatt). The experts use an average scenario, which is classified as realistic. Germans currently pay an average of 37 cents for a kilowatt hour of electricity. In August, inflation just barely missed the 8 percent mark. The prospect of even higher electricity prices is likely to be a punch in the pit of the stomach for many consumers.

The public utilities had previously warned of massive increases in electricity prices. The municipal energy suppliers are expecting a big increase of up to 60 percent in 2023. Bitter for e-car owners: According to expert opinion, higher electricity prices are also increasingly affecting the cost advantage of electric cars.

One way to at least break the wave of price increases for gas and electricity is to reduce energy consumption. Stiftung Warentest, for example, recently revealed simple tips and tricks on how energy costs can be reduced by more than 1,000 euros a year.
