Electricity shortage: why does RTE want to block charging stations during the day?

RTE expressed itself in a report concerning winter 2022-2023. In a context of energy shortage, the operator of the French electricity transmission network shares its recommendations to optimize, in particular, the charging of electric vehicles.

Despite a risk that cannot be completely ruled out », RTE does not plan to blackout for the winter of 2022-2023… but nevertheless wishes to take preventive measures to eliminate the risks as much as possible. The manager of the French electricity transmission network recommends in particular a reduction of 1 to 5% in national consumption and, in the event of a particularly harsh winter, would ideally like to increase this belt tightening to 15%.

A measure only adopted in case of emergency

To do this, RTE is making an inventory of the small gestures that everyone can implement in their daily lives to reduce their consumption, and is also looking into the case of electric vehicles. To reduce their impact on the network, RTE recommends, among other things, the implementation of staggered timetables for their recharging.

The use of electric vehicle terminals present in the car parks of tertiary buildings could be restricted to emergency use between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. […] “, we read from BFM TVwhich echoes RTE’s recommendations.

Towards controlled blockages in the morning and early evening?

The manager also mentions the possibility of purely and simply blocking the charging stations located in the car parks of tertiary buildings “ in case of urgent need “. These blockages and staggered charging times would take place gradually in the event of a red day on the EcoWatt system set up by RTE. The latter is based on a color code linked to the pressure exerted on the electrical network. The red days correspond unsurprisingly to periods when electricity consumption is too high.

As pointed out BFM, the implementation of these measures would be primarily the responsibility of the companies and public authorities that house these charging stations. Electric vehicle users will receive a three-day notice to recharge their cars at night in the event of a red period on the EcoWatt device. This action would save almost 0.2 gigawatts per day, adds BFM.
