Electricity should be cheaper: traffic light presents third relief package

The third relief package of the traffic light coalition was decided. It has a total volume of more than 65 billion euros and is therefore larger in scope than the first two combined. A number of measures were decided.

The most important decisions at a glance:

  • Energy flat rate for pensioners and students

Pensioners are to receive a one-time energy price lump sum of 300 euros on December 1st. Students and trainees are to receive a one-off payment of 200 euros. A flat-rate energy fee of 300 euros had already been introduced for working people.

  • Electricity price for basic consumption is discounted

According to the traffic light coalition, a reduced price should apply for a certain basic consumption of electricity in the future. For an additional consumption beyond that, the price would not be limited.

  • 9-euro ticket successor: New nationwide local transport ticket is to come

The traffic light coalition wants to create a new nationwide public transport ticket. The aim is a price range between 49 and 69 euros per month. The federal states still have to agree to the financing.

  • Standard rates for those in need will increase

With the planned introduction of the citizens’ allowance at the beginning of next year, the SPD, Greens and FDP want to increase the standard rates for the needy to around 500 euros. Today, single people receive basic security of 449 euros per month.

  • Child benefit is to be increased by 18 euros

The traffic light coalition wants to relieve families noticeably. So the child benefit should increase significantly. At the beginning of the year, it should increase by 18 euros per month for the first and second child.

  • Heating subsidy for those entitled to housing benefit

From September to December 2022, a further one-off heating subsidy is to be paid to recipients of housing benefit. After that, the subsidy for those entitled to housing benefit will be permanently integrated into the housing benefit. “It’s a one-time fee of 415 euros for a one-person household,” according to the results of the traffic light coalition committee on the third relief package. 540 euros for two people; for each additional person it is an additional 100 euros.
