Having an idea of the consumption of our televisions, heaters, computers and other internet boxes can be particularly practical, at a time when electricity prices are reaching record highs.
In a context where the cost of living is skyrocketing and electricity prices with, in addition to a further increase already planned for 2023, knowing the consumption of your electronic devices is increasingly important today. and even interesting from the perspective of realizing valuable savings. So let’s take a look at the devices, especially high-tech, on which it is possible to make some effort.
High-tech devices far from the consumption of “traditional” electrical devices
Without this being really very surprising, electric heating is the device that consumes the most at home. According to the Ecological Transition Agency (ADEME), home heating results in an average annual consumption of 4,312 kWh/year, for a total cost of 733 euros per year. The data provided by the agency is modeled on EDF’s regulated tariff for the month of July 2022 for a 6 kVa meter with basic option, i.e. €0.1740/kWh.
In apartments, the cost of electric heating is lower (292 euros/year for 1,719 kWh/year in annual consumption), but it remains the electrical appliance that consumes the most, ahead of the electric hot water tank. The latter costs the French on average (for a 200-litre format) 285 euros each year. It is followed by the fixed air conditioner (7200 kWh/year, or 120 euros).
Behind, we find more traditional and/or relatively essential appliances, such as the combined refrigerator, the freezer, the dryer, the dishwasher, the television (187 kWh/year, 32 dollars/year), the hob glass-ceramic or electric oven, which each represent a cost of several tens of euros each year. Then come the more modern devices, associated with new technologies.
Possible savings on electronic devices, with simple gestures
Excluding more traditional devices, therefore, it is not surprisingly the fixed computer that consumes the most. This is obviously an average, but the ADEME estimates the annual cost at 21 euros (123 kWh/year, over an average duration of use of 3 h 54/day), an expense slightly higher than that generated by a game console (103 kWh/year), the cost of which is estimated at 18 euros per year.
Note that the laptop, it would weigh, always according to the agency, only for 4 euros per year, with an annual consumption of 22 kWh, for a use similar to the desktop computer. The internet box (97 kWh/year, 16 euros/year) and the TV decoder (87 kWh/year, 15 euros/year) spice up the bill a little more.
Once all that said, it is possible to make savings on a daily basis, simply by using a new, more efficient device. ADEME estimates, for example, that a more efficient television in its energy consumption can cost twice as much in electricity as a television in energy class E.
It is also never too late to remember that turning off your devices (such as computers, televisions or even unplugged chargers) rather than leaving them on standby can help save up to 10% of your electricity. Which, for large consumers, constitutes a significant saving.
