Electro Joker – Caterham EV Seven: Super light rapids

The Caterham Seven is the epitome of a super-light, super-pure sports car for maximum driving pleasure and for powerful experts at the wheel. Super light means: Even the strongest does not weigh much more than half a ton. Now the British are introducing an electric version.

Whole cars at Caterham weigh as much as just the battery in an electric car elsewhere. Nevertheless, the small English sports car manufacturer is now venturing into the electric. The EV Seven concept car is based on the classic Seven, but has been converted to electricity with an e-axle from Swindon Powertrain and a 51 kWh battery. Despite the battery, the two-seater is said to weigh less than 700 kilograms. The 172 kW/243 hp electric drive allows the sprint to 100 km/h in around four seconds and a top speed of 210 km/h. The electric Seven, which was developed for both road and track use, provides electricity for around 20 minutes of racetrack use with a usable battery capacity of around 40 kWh. Caterham wants to present its EV Seven concept to the public for the first time at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in July present. “We currently have no plans to bring EV Seven into production,” said Caterham CEO Bob Laishley. “It’s a test balloon to see how well an EV powertrain works for our customers’ specific use cases.” It weighs 525 kg and runs at 225 km/h. The sprint value is given as 3.4 seconds.
