Electronic Arts: the publisher will cut 6% of current positions to better look to the future

Is there a small crisis among historical video game publishers? WhileUbisoft chained project postponements and cancellations, Electronic Arts has just announced measures impacting the future of its company, on the occasion of the end of its financial year this week.

In a communicated in which Andrew Wilson presents EA as in a position of strength and among industry leaders, it indeed confirms thatabout 6% of employees will see their job cut. A party will be offered new assignments, but in the event of refusal or impossibility of repositioning, severance pay and benefits are provided. The president of the company specifies that this initiative was taken with the aim of refocus the publisher’s activities towards online games, titles with strong stories and creative community experiences : all the games that did not fit into this framework have therefore obviously been canceled.

As we approach the end of the fiscal year, I am writing to share news about our activities. Even amid macroeconomic uncertainty, EA operates from a position of strength. Our business is growing as we continue to deliver high-quality games and incredible content across some of the world’s biggest and most beloved franchises. At the heart of global football culture, EA SPORTS FIFA 23 is poised to become the greatest title in franchise history. Apex Legends’ performance is strong on the heels of a momentous 4th anniversary event, and The Sims is fueling the imagination and engagement of its passionate community.

We are leaders in a dynamic industry with new audiences, new technologies and new media trends that are fundamentally reshaping the world around us. This level of transformation creates powerful opportunities. Now more than ever, we need to focus on our strategic priorities: creating games and experiences that entertain massive online communities; create interactive success stories; and amplify the power of community in and around our games with social and creative tools. These priorities align our investments with opportunities to have the greatest impact.

As we focus more on our overall portfolio, we are moving away from projects that do not contribute to our strategy, reviewing our real estate footprint and restructuring some of our teams. These decisions are expected to impact approximately six percent of our company’s workforce. This is the hardest part, and we work through the process with the utmost care and respect. Whenever possible, we offer our colleagues the opportunity to move on to other projects. Where this is not possible, we provide severance pay and additional benefits such as health care and career transition services. Communication of these decisions began earlier this quarter and we expect it to continue through the start of the next fiscal year.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to all of our employees who have contributed to our incredible story thus far. It’s through your love of games that we continue to fulfill our mission to inspire the world to play. Looking ahead, we’re focused on writing our next big chapter of bringing more amazing games to more people around the world – inspiring them to build community, participate in shared fandom, and experience happy experiences. The future of entertainment is interactive, and no team is better equipped than we are to lead this transformation.

Thanks for all you’ve done.

As disney, Electronic Arts therefore hopes to visibly tighten its activities and its payroll to make better progress in the coming years. His next headline, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is available from €61.99 on Amazon.co.uk.
