Eleven million parcels a day: Post asks for early dispatch

Even more people will probably want to send a Christmas parcel this year. Swiss Post is already preparing for new record volumes and is advising not to leave the parcels, parcels and letters on the road shortly before the festival.

Deutsche Post expects "new record volumes" of parcels in the weeks leading up to Christmas. On the days immediately before Christmas Eve, the company expects up to eleven million parcels a day, as a spokesman for the "Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung" said. A good five million parcels are transported on average days.

post Office 40.58

The company is arming itself with more staff and vehicles for the run-up to Christmas, the spokesman said. During the first lockdown, another 4,000 workers were hired. Now another 10,000 additional temporary workers would be added, "who, by the way, are all paid according to Deutsche Post's in-house tariff". 13,000 additional vehicles are in use.

Swiss Post calls on "FAS" to order and send Christmas presents as early as possible. In addition, recipients should pick up their parcels from branches and packing stations as quickly as possible so that they do not fill up. Postage stamps should also be bought on the Internet instead of in post offices.

Deadline December 19

In order for parcels to be under the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve, they should, according to the report, be sent no later than December 19 by 12 p.m. Postcards and letters should be dropped in by December 22nd before the mailbox is emptied.

Because of the booming online trade, the Post has been breaking its own high year after year for a long time. This year it happened exceptionally early, five weeks before the end of the year. The reason: In Corona times, many people prefer to shop on the Internet than in stores. By the end of the year, the group expects around 1.8 billion parcels to be transported, which would be an increase of around 15 percent. The increase has never been so high. For comparison: in 2018 the increase was 7.7 percent and in 2019 it was 5.7 percent. The competitors Hermes and DPD are also expecting maximum values.
