Elie Semoun: this big success of French cinema that he refused

Elie Semoun, who is about to unveil “Ducobu President!”, has just revealed that he had refused a role in a big popular comedy with 5 million admissions. Find out what movie it is!

A career is made up of choices, some happy, some unhappy. At the microphone of our colleagues from Europe 1actor and comedian Elie Semoun returned to one of them, in this case a not very popular choice, when he refused in the 90s to play in what would later prove to be a big success popular.

Guest this weekend of the show There is only one life to promote Ducobu Président!, in theaters on July 13 and of which he is both the director and one of the main actors, Elie Semoun revealed that he had said no to a comedy close to 5 million admissions. The movie in question? The Truth if I Lie, released in theaters in April 1997.

Why did Elie Semoun refuse to appear in the credits of La Vérité si je mens? “I don’t know, I was wrong”he says on Europe 1. “Guy Bedos said no, Yvan Attal said no. I was not the only one to have said no. I also said no to other films that flops. So we can be wrong, we can to be right.”

The Truth if I lie: Jean-Pierre Bacri almost acted in the film!

Elie Semoun finally gives the reason for this refusal a little later in the interview, without however indicating the role which had then been offered to him. “I was doing a show with Dieudo and I had to go on vacation. We had just shot Everything must disappear with José Garcia and Ophélie Winter”he recalls. “José had spoken to me about The Truth if I lie. I hesitated. And I chose the holidays”.

In view of these statements, Elie Semoun does not seem to have more regrets than that at this missed opportunity. Even if his vacation will “cost” him all the same nearly 4.9 million admissions at the box office!
