Eligible for LEP? Here is what you can earn in 2022 by emptying your Livret A

When you open your mailbox this morning, you may find a message from the Directorate General of Public Finances. Don’t worry: it can save you money! Explanations.

Have you considered the Livret d’epargne Populaire (LEP)? This is the subject of an email that several million French people have received, or are about to receive. Sender: the General Directorate of Public Finances. Open it, it can earn you money.

As promised this summer, the DGFiP began sending millions of emails to French people eligible for the Livret d’epargne populaire on Tuesday. That is to say to tax households whose reference tax income (RFR), for the year 2021, is less than 20297 euros for the first partor even 31,137 euros, for example, for a married couple with a child.

LEP 4.60%: you may be eligible for this great booklet, here’s how to find the info

If you are in this case and you do not have an LEP (this is the case for nearly 8 million French people), it is in your interest to pay all the necessary attention to this message. LEP, indeed, is currently the ideal investment for precautionary savings. It has the same characteristics as the Livret A: tax exemption, state guarantee on the capital and availability at any time. But it pays a lot more: 4.60% since August 1, against 2% for the Livret A. Clearly, it is the only safe investment rivaling inflation.

A potential gain of 39 euros in 2022

It makes quite a difference! Let’s take the example of a Livret A pledged with 5800 euros, average outstanding amount at the end of 2021. By keeping this balance constant in 2022, without any withdrawals and deposits, it will bring you back at the end of the year. 79.75 euros interest, at the average rate of 1.375% net over the year. It should be remembered, in fact, that the Livret A rate was still only 0.5% at the start of the year…

Have you received the email from the DGFiP and are you deciding to open a LEP today? If your bank is doing its job well, it will only take a few days to comply: the procedure is now much simpler than in the past. Your new account will therefore start earning interest from 15 September, ie over 7 fortnights between now and the end of the year. You move 5790 euros there, because you must maintain at least 10 euros on your Livret A to avoid closing it.

Race report: in this case, your cumulative interests, Livret A + LEP, will reach 118.90 euros in 2022: 41.20 euros for the first and 77.70 euros for the second. That is a card of more than 39 euros. What justify the effort to open a LEP. Reminder: you can invest up to 7700euros.
