Elisabeth Borne at Matignon: when will the cabinet reshuffle take place?

The ministerial reshuffle will not be for now. The council of ministers which was scheduled for Thursday has been postponed “sine die” to allow time for the new Prime Minister, Elisabeth Borne, to choose the names of her ministers. One thing seems clear: the former Minister of Labor should not, at least initially, opt for a bloated government.

This is Emmanuel Macron’s wish: to form a tight government with around fifteen ministers, twenty at most. Jean Castex’s government had 41 posts in total: 16 ministers, 15 delegate ministers and around ten secretaries of state. But initially, Elisabeth Borne will only name her ministers. We will therefore have to wait for the results of the legislative elections on 12th and 19th June next to know the other appointments, if they take place.

New government likely to be announced by Friday

Still, the picture is taking shape at the moment. Elisabeth Borne was still Tuesday evening at the Élysée to compile the list of names with the Head of State. The announcement of the new government should take place by Friday.

At the same time, the new Prime Minister is working on the composition of her own cabinet. Appointments that say a lot about Matignon’s political line in usual times. Aurélien Rousseau, former boss of the Île-de-France Regional Health Agency (ARS), was appointed chief of staff on Tuesday. He had been deputy chief of staff to Prime Ministers Manuel Valls and Bernard Cazeneuve from 2015 to 2017.

Another appointment, that of Thomas Lavielle, director of the cabinet of the Prefect of Yvelines, who becomes the chief of staff of Elisabeth Borne. According to information from Europe 1, Marie-Emmanuelle Assidon, the former director of communication for the Socialist Party, should be appointed adviser for internal affairs.
