French Prime Minister Jean Castex handed in his resignation on Monday after almost two years in office. His successor will be the previous Minister of Labor.

Elisabeth Borne, the new French Prime Minister.
no. French President Emmanuel Macron has appointed former Labor Minister Elisabeth Borne as his new prime minister. The Élysée Palace announced this in a statement. Borne is the first woman to hold the post since 1992. She succeeds Jean Castex, who submitted his resignation earlier in the evening.
In France, the step is considered a formality after a presidential election so that the president can appoint a new cabinet. However, it came surprisingly late a good three weeks after the vote.
Borne’s nomination was expected in advance. Macron, who was re-elected as president in April, had announced that he wanted to look for a prime minister with green and socio-political credentials. Elisabeth Borne’s inside knowledge of how the state and French unions work will help the president push through reforms, including Macron’s most controversial campaign promise: raising the retirement age.
More to come.
