Queen Elizabeth II’s coffin has arrived in Edinburgh, in the courtyard of the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The funeral procession traveled 300 kilometers across Scotland. For the Britons who came out to see the convoy, it was an emotional day, with some holding back a tear as best they could.

The royal coffin arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, after six hours on Scottish roads where tens of thousands of Britons thronged. A large crowd also around this residence of the crown. The passage of the funeral procession, in which was the coffin of the late Queen Elizabeth II, was a very special moment. The black royal hearse with transparent windows passed in just one minute, leaving just enough time for spectators to see the queen’s coffin. An oak coffin covered with a royal family flag and a wreath.

A profound silence gripped the crowd as he passed. Some spectators tried to hold back their tears in silence, others whispered or made prayers, thanks. A painful moment.

“I just want to say thank you to him”

“It’s a lot of emotion”, confides to Europe 1 Jacky, after the passage of the convoy. “It’s very hard for everyone. She brought so much to this country. Everyone fell silent, Edinburgh fell into silence. I had never heard that. It’s really a moment that will remain forever etched in my memory, in the Union, so much she has done for us. I just want to say thank you to her.”

The next leg of the tribute will take place on Monday. The Queen’s coffin will be stored in Saint-Gilles Cathedral for a religious ceremony in the presence of King Charles III. It will then be exhibited for 24 hours to allow the Scots to meditate one last time.
