Elon Musk announces probable location of Tesla’s next Gigafactory

After the new factories located in Shanghai, Berlin and Austin in Texas, Tesla has announced that it wants to build a new Gigafactory on the American continent. Elon Musk shared the potential countries selected for its establishment during the annual meeting with the shareholders of the brand.

In order to meet a demand that does not seem to be decreasing, Tesla needs to build other factories than those currently in place. Indeed, with only four factories spread over three continents, it will be difficult to exceed the two million vehicles produced per year, which is insufficient for Elon Musk. That’s good, a new factory is planned in North America, and the location could be announced before the end of the year.

A new factory to produce even more vehicles

It’s no secret that Tesla can’t keep up with the growing demand for electric vehicles, as the delivery times of its current models show. With an annual production capacity estimated today at less than two million vehicles, the priority is therefore to increase the number of factories and simplify manufacturing processes.

During the annual meeting with Tesla shareholders, which took place on August 4 in Austin, Texas, Elon Musk announced that he would no doubt be ready to reveal the exact location of the new factory by the end. of the current year. This comes even though the factories in Berlin, Germany and Austin, Texas are still in their break-in period, and production capacities are currently limited.

Among the countries vying to be chosen by Tesla to establish itself, there would be Mexico, the United States and Canada. Indeed, a recording of a discussion between Elon Musk and employees of the brand that was obtained Electrek last June, confirmed that North America would be chosen for the next plant.

Canada, Mexico, USA?

Yesterday, when Elon Musk asked shareholders “Where should we build it?— speaking of the next plant — many suggestions came from the crowd, including Canada. The CEO of Tesla was then amused by declaring: “We hear a lot about Canada. I’m half Canadian, maybe…“.

We will undoubtedly learn more by the end of the year, but for sure, Tesla’s next Gigafactory will be in North America, which would make the brand’s fifth such building on the continent. As a reminder, Tesla currently has two factories that manufacture or assemble vehicles (Austin and Fremont), a factory specializing in everything related to solar panels and energy storage (Buffalo), and a battery manufacturing factory. (Reno) in the USA.
