Elon Musk begins to tackle Apple and its economic model

Elon Musk, the richest man in the world, has yet another high-profile exit. This time around, it’s tackling the App Store business model, adding grist to Epic Games’ mill.

Elon Musk

Elon Musk doesn’t like Apple’s policies. Once again, the richest man in the world did not hesitate to publicly criticize part of the economic model of the firm at the apple.

“A tax on the internet”

It all starts with a May 3, 2022 Bloomberg article about PayPal backing an antitrust lawsuit in Europe against iPhone payments. Elon Musk then tweeted his opinion on the subject, indignant that “the App Store is like having a 30% tax on the internet. It’s not good at all» before bidding that this commission is «literally 10 times higher than it should be“.

Remember, however, that since the lawsuit between Epic Games and Apple, Apple has shown signs of good faith by reducing in particular in 2021 its commission to 15% for “small” developers with a turnover of less than 1 million. dollars per year. However, this is still too high according to some for the service offered (hosting, curation and promotion).

The issue of Twitter funding

Remember that Elon Musk has just bought Twitter for 44 billion dollars and certainly intends to make his purchase profitable in many ways. With the Twitter Blue subscription – a Premium subscription which should allow you to edit your tweets, among other things – at 3 dollars per month, the commission that Apple (and Google) could take on it is not negligible.

A real internet troll, Elon Musk intends to put a coin back in the buzz machine by relaunching the debate. But if each of his tweets has a strong impact on the price of certain stocks or cryptocurrencies (he participated in the biggest rises in Bitcoin or Dogecoin and caused the price of Twitter to plunge shortly before his takeover), his exit does not seem to have turned the course of Apple upside down. It must be said that with 2,580 billion dollars of capitalization, the AAPL action is rather solid.
