Elon Musk promises the Tesla Roadster for the end of 2024 but hard to believe it

The Tesla Roadster, which we thought was almost buried, returns to the forefront after several messages from Elon Musk on X indicating that it is almost ready.

The Tesla Roadster is back! After the Tesla Cybertruck, the Roadster was Elon Musk’s other big promise that the public has been waiting for since 2017. Elon Musk had been so discreet about it for several months that we wondered if the project had not not yet been postponed. This is apparently not the case.

With many messages broadcast on X/Twitter This February 28, Elon Musk surprises everyone by announcing that the model will be unveiled at the end of the year, for production from next year. Deadlines that are always so short that we must take with caution with Elon Musk, who does not have the same notion of time as ordinary mortals.

A collaboration between SpaceX and Tesla

While the announcement of the abandonment of the Apple Car project caused reactions in the USA, Elon Musk chose this moment to release the news that no one expected about the Roadster: “ Tonight we radically revised the design goals for the new Tesla Roadster. »

The boss of Tesla and SpaceX took the opportunity to slip that this model will be the result of a collaboration between the two companies. It even states “ that there will never be another car like this, if you can even call it a car “.

It must be said that the performance planned for the Roadster is closer to that of a rocket than a conventional car.

0 to 100 km/h in less than a second

The more the years go by, the more the accelerations indicated for this model seem beyond belief. In a response to a message on Twitter asking him if 0 to 60 mph (equivalent to 0 to 100 km/h) will be done in approximately 1 second, Elon Musk affirmed that the model will be able to achieve it in less than a second. He adds that “ This is the least interesting part ” of the project.

When it was revealed as a concept in 2017, Tesla presented the Roadster as being able to go from 0 to 96 km/h in 1.9 seconds. It was already stratospheric, but not enough with the competition pushing behind. In 2021, this time it is a new record that Tesla was aiming for by announcing less than 1.1 seconds to achieve this acceleration. It’s hard to imagine how untrained drivers will be able to cope with acceleration of less than a second.

New realistic deadlines this time?

Elon Musk assures on Twitter that the Tesla Roadster in its finalized version will be presented at the end of 2024. He goes even further by indicating that they are thinking of shipping them as early as next year, i.e. in 2025. This seems like always very optimistic.

It should be remembered that the project was unveiled in 2017 with a production objective from 2020. But as with the Cybertruck, the project has fallen far behind schedule. Slow development and supply problems linked to the pandemic have repeatedly shifted the objective. It is true that the last date mentioned 2023, that would only be one year later.

I think it has a chance to be the most mind-blowing product demo of all time », Added Elon Musk on the social network. The Tesla Roadster could therefore be a completely irrational product and we wonder if the price of just over 200,000 euros will also be catapulted to heights never reached by Tesla.

While the market eagerly awaits the affordable Tesla, it’s the Roadster that could steal the show this year. News to follow by subscribing to our newsletter dedicated to electric mobility, Watt Else:
