Elon Musk’s new ambitions for X (ex-Twitter) one year after his takeover


X (ex-Twitter) celebrated Thursday, October 26, one year since the takeover of the social network by Elon Musk. After having “freed the bird” by paying 44 billion dollars, the whimsical billionaire shook up the house by firing his CEO and most of the managers, then 6,500 of the company’s 8,000 employees. And since then, he has continued to make announcements which have not really reassured advertisers, but with one idea in mind: to make X a real all-purpose application, a “super-app” on the model of WeChat . To achieve this, the social network evolves in small steps and regularly tests new features for diversification purposes, but also in order to enrich the overall experience.

And for this somewhat special anniversary, Elon Musk and the general director of the social network who joined last spring, Linda Yaccarino, took the opportunity to announce their new ambitions. They now both have the desire to compete with YouTube and LinkedIn, just a few hours after having had WhatsApp in their sights, by launching audio and video calls.

They also aim to create a news agency wire service called XWire which would be a competitor to PR Newswire, specializing in press releases, according to a knowledgeable source cited by Bloomberg. Little information has leaked from this executive meeting with the entire company. We do not yet know exactly what these new services might look like.

In a joint internal memo sent to X staff and consulted by Bloomberg, Elon Musk and Linda Yaccarino in any case showed their optimism by declaring that the company was “now positioned for growth“, congratulating himself on having achieved a “decade of innovation in just 12 months” on the platform. The duo is also banking on paid services for the future.

X actually plans to launch two new premium subscription levels soon, while the social network has set up a subscription to $ 1 per year in New Zealand and the Philippines. New users of the platform in these two countries must now pay to post messages or other content, like, reply or add favorites. To do this, they will have to pay the sum of $1 per year.

A year after the arrival of Elon Musk, however, the figures are not necessarily there. According to Similarweb, web traffic on the platform fell by 14% between September 2022 and September 2023. The share of branded content fell by 16.5%. Web traffic fell by 19% over the period in the United States, and by almost 18% on mobile. The trend was similar in other countries: -11.6% in the United Kingdom, -13.4% in France, -17.9% in Germany and -17.5% in Australia.
