Elton John has performed for Joe Biden in the White House garden – a special moment in his music career spanning over 50 years.

Elton John (75) made a stop in the capital Washington on his farewell tour of the United States of America. In the garden in front of the White House, the British musician performed his greatest hits like “I’m Still Standing”, “Rocket Man” or “Crocodile Rock” on Friday (September 23).

The 45 minute concert was part of “A Night When Hope and History Rhyme,” an event the White House used to honor “everyday history writers” such as nurses, teachers or activists. Among the approximately 2,000 guests were the Afghan Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai (25) and the former tennis player and activist Billie Jean King (78).

Elton John awarded Medal of Honor

Special thanks also go to Elton John. US President Joe Biden (79) thanked him, among other things, for his music and his commitment to the fight against HIV. He then presented him with the National Humanities Medal. It recognizes individuals or organizations whose work has promoted understanding of the humanities. “I’m never stunned, but I’m stunned,” Elton John said tearfully at the handover.

For him, this performance was “the icing on the cake”, although he had “already played in some beautiful places”. But the singer was also critical: “I just wish America could be more bipartisan.”

Joe Biden: “Our family loves his music”

During Donald Trump’s tenure, the supporter of the Democratic Party had repeatedly declined an invitation to the White House. But the change of government has made him change his mind. Much to the delight of Joe Biden, whom wife Jill (71) described as a “big fan who also happens to be the President of the United States”. Joe Biden agreed: “Like many Americans, our family loves his music”. As his memoirs reveal, he used to sing “Crocodile Rock” with his sons on their way to school.
