“Elusive”: This Napoleon character gave director Ridley Scott a hard time

Napoleon, directed by Ridley Scott, will be released in France on November 22. The filmmaker, to whom we owe Gladiator or Alien, evokes the character who gave him the most trouble during the writing.

Napoleon, one of the most anticipated films of the year, will land in France on November 22, 2023. Unveiled on July 10, the trailer promises an epic as epic as it is grandiose, worthy of the fame of this major historical figure. .

According Dark Horizons, director Ridley Scott will offer us 6 great battle scenes in this biopic worn by Joaquin Phoenix. If the director will obviously emphasize the grandiloquent side of Napoleon through action sequences, he will also show us the Emperor in his intimacy.

Thus, as we have seen in the trailer, the film will explore the tumultuous relationship between the Little Corporal and Joséphine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby). The latter was Napoleon’s great love. She was Empress of the French from 1804 to 1809 and Queen of Italy from 1805 to 1809.

Asked by the empire magazinewhich devotes its front page to feature films, Ridley Scott spoke about his work around the character of Joséphine, a particularly stimulating challenge:

“It was very difficult work because it is easier to start talking about battles when you attack Napoleon. So I kept restricting myself, coming back to Josephine”says the director.

What was so complicated with Josephine was that she was elusive.

“What was so complicated with Joséphine was that she was elusive. Everything I could read about her, documents, testimonies, letters from Napoleon… Each book was completely different”adds Ridley Scott.

“Josephine was just a huge contradiction. Every time I thought I had understood: ‘This is who she is, and I think I can figure her out’, something contradicted everything”says the director.

The biopic will therefore probe the relationship between these two fascinating characters but will not fail to offer us epic battle sequences. In this sense, Empire magazine has unveiled an unpublished photo where we can see Napoleon, perched on his horse, sword in hand.

The monarch brandishes here an officer’s saber from the Imperial Guard. This is an elite regiment of the Napoleonic wars. Get ready for an epic big show in theaters on November 22, 2023 (unless the Hollywood strike impacts release).

After this film, Ridley Scott will gratify us with another large-scale work with Gladiator 2, in theaters on November 20, 2024.
