Saccording to the police press release, no foul play is suspected, although authorities are awaiting autopsy results from the Davidson County Medical Examiner’s Office for an official cause of death. In a statement provided to Fox17, Nashville Mayor John Cooper said: “My deepest condolences to the family of Shonka Dukureh. Shonka graduated from Fisk and made Nashville her home for many years. His powerful voice and artistry will live on through his music, and we honor his memory on this sad day.“
After hearing the news, Baz Luhrmann, the film’s director Elvis, expressed his sorrow. Captioning a series of photos of Shonka Dukureh, he wrote: “A special light went out today and the entire Elvis movie family is heartbroken at the loss of Shonka Dukureh. From the moment she entered our world, Shonka brought joy, wit and of course her voice and music. Every time she was on sets, on stage or even in the room, everyone always felt inspired. Shonka was just beginning to find a wider audience for her extraordinary talent.In conclusion, the director added: “One of Shonka’s favorite everyday words was ‘blessing’ and the entire Elvis cast and I feel truly blessed to have spent time with her.“

Last June, the singer told WPLN that many of her students contacted her after seeing her in Elvis. “They are amazed, in mode: ‘Wow! Miss Shonka! Really ?’ I said, ‘I’m still Mrs. Shonka, you know!’“, she had confided. There are like 70,000 people there.’ I said : ‘I’ve gone too far now to be nervous because it’s showtime now! I can’t turn around!’“
