The “Hide-my-email” feature, originally integrated into Proton Pass, is now available in Proton Mail. A welcome addition, which does not generate any additional costs for its subscribers.

It took Proton two years to fully exploit its acquisition of SimpleLogin. While the Swiss company had already integrated email aliases into Proton Pass, it is unveiling its deployment in Proton Mail, facilitating the management of alternative addresses and strengthening the security of Internet users’ digital identities.

A free option for all Proton Ultimate and Proton Free subscribers

If you checked your Proton email today, you may have noticed this little new feature. Proton Mail finally integrates an email alias generator, offering all of its subscribers the possibility of better protecting the confidentiality of their real email address.

Hide-my-email is already available on webmail, as well as on Proton Mail’s Windows and macOS applications. To access it, simply click on the Security Center icon (shield) in the right sidebar. From here, you can create as many aliases as you want if you’re subscribed to the Proton Unlimited plan, or ten alternative identities if you’ve opted for the free plan.

While the Hide-my-email option was until now reserved for Proton Pass, its extension to Proton Mail greatly facilitates the management of alternative identities; no more need to juggle between the different services in the Proton ecosystem, or create a fixed secondary address whose transfer options you must manually configure.

Aliases to transfer them all, and protect your identity

Aliases created using the Hide-my-email function are randomly generated, and you can delete them at any time. If you don’t have a SimpleLogin account, the only setting you will be able to change is your username. However, if you have created a custom SimpleLogin subdomain, Proton Mail’s alias generator allows you to use it to create your alternative address.

As a reminder, your email address is precious, and you must take care of it. We can no longer count the number of abusive treatments of this type of information, even though it is confidential, nor of data leaks leading to the resale of address listings for commercial and/or malicious purposes. In the best case scenario, you are drowning in newsletters and other marketing offers that you never subscribed to. In more annoying configurations, it is the burst phishing attempts that attack you. And in the most critical situations, you run the risk of seeing your online accounts hacked, especially if the passwords associated with your email address are not sufficiently complex, or used for several connection spaces.

Since Hide-my-email is linked to your real Proton email address, you automatically receive confirmation emails or other messages sent by the websites on which you have created an account. A ready-made solution for accessing services that you only plan to use once, or whose invasive emailing practices you are aware of.
